Transfer: Sunderland sign Chelsea defender

Sunderland AFC have completed the signing of Senegalese international centre-back Papy Djilobodji from Chelsea FC for £8million.

The 27-year-old, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, has put pen-to-paper on a 4-year contract at the Stadium of Light and becomes David Moyes’ first signing as Sunderland manager.

Djilobodji was on loan at Werder Bremen during the second half of last season, playing an integral part in helping the club to Bundesliga safety, including an 88th minute win on the final day to secure survival.

Having begun his career in Senegal with ASC Saloum, Djilobodji has played the majority of his football in France with Nantes, before heading to Stamford Bridge last summer.

He has been capped 13 times by Senegal and appeared at the 2015 African Cup of Nations.
