A hulking ex-con wanted on a parole violation was identified Saturday as the ski-masked gunman killed alongside a Hofstra student in a botched robbery.

Dalton Smith, 30, of Hempstead, was gunned down inside the two-story home along with one of his three hostages, 21-year-old Andrea Rebello, police said.

Authorities were seeking Smith for skipping out on his parole for a robbery conviction. A warrant for his arrest was issued April 25, Nassau County police said.

The suspect’s criminal past dates back to a 1999 robbery arrest, and included two other robbery busts and an assault charge, cops said. He was identified through fingerprints.

Smith knocked on the front door of the off-campus house early Friday and forced his way inside, cops said. He was killed in the gunfire after police stormed the home, and his weapons was recovered at the scene.

But it remained unclear Saturday who fired the fatal shot that killed Rebello, who died inside the Uniondale, L.I., house where she lived with her identical twin.

The Nassau County police released no information about the fatal shooting Saturday as their investigation continued, with a spokesman saying the silence would likely continue until Monday.

Surviving sister Jessica Rebello remained inside her family’s Tarrytown, N.Y., home. The slaying occurred two days before the Hofstra graduation ceremonies.
