UNIJOS students protest devt. levy, boycott exams

Travellers using the popular Bauchi Road in Jos, Plateau State witnessed a traffic gridlock on Monday as students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) barricaded the road during a protest.

The students boycotted their second semester examinations and embarked on protest against the imposition of N10,000 development levy by the school authorities.

Police had a difficult time containing the protest as students trooped to the streets around 8am wearing uniform black attires.

President of the Students Union Government, Abel Nok, said he tried to pacify the students and begged them to write their examination, but they refused.

Nok said, “I met with the school authorities and we resolved to ask the students to sit for their examinations pending the resolution of the dispute, but they were adamant.”

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, reacting to the issue wondering why the students should protest as the levy had been there for a long time.

He said, “The development and acceptance levy have been there for a long time and have been fully embraced by all the stakeholders and I wonder why the protest at this time.”

He however said he was meeting with representatives of the SUG to resolve the issues.
