The questions left unanswered as US prepares to sell war equipment to Nigeria

The Nigerian government is hoping to purchase up to 12 super Tucano attack aircraft from the United States of America, to help in prosecuting the war against Boko Haram terrorist sect.

According to a Reuters news report, the US government also intends to help Nigeria in intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance.

The US had for the past few years, refused to sell weapons to the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan over allegations of human right abuses being perpetrated by the Nigerian Army.

Since taking over power, the US government has had a change of heart, by backing the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, while tacitly endorsing and offering, at different times, to support Nigeria in fighting terrorism, corruption and fuel scarcity.

While it remains to be seen how the US will assist Nigeria in fighting terror, the hypocrisy of the Obama administration in assisting the Buhari government – that has also been accused of human rights abuse, including the wanton killing of Shi’ite Muslims and IPOB members – and turning down the Jonathan administration for human rights abuse, is dumbfounding.

Perhaps, there’s more to this sudden goodwill by the US government, than we know.
