“We are not friends with a murderer” – Friends of Cynthia murder suspect protest his detention

by Stanley Azuakola

The tragic story of Cynthia Osokogu, the lady who was invited to a hotel in Lagos by her Facebook friends, then raped and murdered, continues to generate ripples two weeks after the news broke out.

Cynthia’s killers have already been arrested and paraded by the police. The two main suspects, Echezona Nwabufor, 33, and Ezekiel Nnechuwu Olisa Eloka, 23,  have also confessed to their crimes. However, friends and relatives of one of the suspects, Nonso Maduakor, are pushing back against the accusation that he played a part in the killing. They claim that the 25-year old Maduakor, who is the pastor of the Youth Fellowship at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Oluti, Lagos, was simply incapable of commiting such wickedness.

According to them on Monday August 20, 2012, Maduakor, a pharmacy graduate from the Igbinedion University Okada doing his compulsory internship with Oxpharm, was at his duty post when a plain-clothes police officer arrived. The officer claimed to be going through pains, restlessness, and having sleepless nights as a result of a car accident he was involved in. He asked to buy Rohypnol, a drug which is used to manage anxiety disorders, insomnia and restlessness, and Nonso Maduakor sold it to him, without a prescription order from a doctor. That was the beginning of his troubles.

Ten minutes afterwards, the police officer returned with his colleagues and arrested Nonso Maduakor for the killing of Cynthia Osokogu. However, Maduakor was not implicated by any of the alleged killers during their confession. Maduakor says he has never met any of them in his life and did not even sell drugs to them.

His seventeen friends who signed the statement titled An innocent man is in jail and you are next, all claimed that they could vouch for the character of Maduakor, who was the best graduating student of his department in the university and a devout Christian.

In their statement, they said “Nonso Maduakor is our friend, and we are not friends with a murderer.”

Maduakor has been in police custody for almost two weeks now.
