‘We rejected $3 million bribe from Jonathan’

The Conference of Islamic Organisations (CIO) has revealed that some associates of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan offered the Islamic body $3 million in exchange for goodwill and votes in the April 2015 presidential polls.

This revelation was made by the Coordinator of CIO, Imam Abdullahi Shuaib at the 22nd National Islamic Training Programme (NITP), which commenced in Odosengolu, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

He said that the offer was tagged “religious fund” by the previous administration but was in fact to secure the support of Muslims in the country for Jonathan during the said elections.

He said: “It is not a secret, they came, offering over three million dollars, we said no…it came through their proxies to us and we said no.

“And today we have been vindicated and its not even part of our own culture to take bribe.

“We prefer to go hungry than to collect a bribe from somebody, that is unlawful” he finished.

He said that when some of Jonathan’s aides approached them with the offer, it was rejected “because we know very well that it was a bait; it was a poison and you cannot eat and dine with the devil and think the devil will not come after you.”
