‘What the President meant in his Telegraph interview’ – Garba Shehu

The presidency, in a statement on Tuesday, described the recent wave of backlash, over President Buhari’s interview granted to an international media out fit, as a huge misunderstanding.

This was contained in a release signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

He said that the untoward reaction was due to incomplete understanding of what the President meant when he answered a question about the reputation of Nigerians abroad.

“Unfortunately, there are also Nigerians giving these country bad name abroad, and it is to those Nigerians that the President referred in his comment,” Garba Shehu said.

He further stated that:

“People may play politics and online games with the President’s comments, but the fact of the matter remains that Nigeria’s reputation abroad has been severely damaged by her own citizens.

“These Nigerians who leave their country to go and make mischief on foreign shores have given the rest of us a bad reputation that we daily struggle to overcome.”

Shehu drew the attention of Nigerians to the President’s effort to manage the international image of Nigeria and the war against corruption. He went further to state that the presidency is aware of the numerous problems and challenges Nigerians face.

“President Buhari is very aware of the problems the people of Nigeria face both at home and abroad, and he is not shying away from admitting them even as he focuses on solutions to bring them to a permanent end.”
