Why we’re awarding scholarship to deserving students – Desmond Elliot

by Isi Esene

The Desmond Elliot Foundation has awarded scholarships to 10 deserving  students in Lagos.

The Foundation which was established by Nollywood actor and director, Desmond Elliot is geared towards empowering less privileged students in their quest for a tertiary education.

Elliot, who is gunning to represent Surulere Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly with the All Progressives Congress (APC), made this disclosure at a presentation ceremony on Saturday, November 22, 2014, in Surulere.

According to Desmond Elliot: “The Foundation started in 2006 and it has done a lot in giving back to the society. 10 students will be sponsored into the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

“This is the first batch , other batches will be awarded in the coming weeks,” he said.

He reiterated that the Foundation aims to take young people off the streets so as to add value to the development of the nation and humanity as a whole.

Elliot continued saying, “I want to make it a point of duty that in the next two years, every youth as long as you’re a Surulere resident, you’re doing some form of tertiary education. Right now as it stands, we have already gotten admission for a couple of people at the Open University to study.

“My plan is to make sure I get people to go learn skills, empower them and try to get as many people off the streets as possible,” he said.

He also announced a health insurance programme for 15 people aged 55 years and above in his political constituency.

Present at the event are members of his political constituency, youth, Nollywood practitioners including Lancelot Imasuen, Andy Amenechi, Zik Zulu Okafor and others.
