Wife claims husband made her wear spiked dog collar, sexually assaulted her with golf club

greyes@mercurynews.comClyde Berg, 74, at preliminary hearing this week, is charged with sexually assaulting his wife, among other charges, in a bizarre case that could be thrown out because wife walked off the witness stand Wednesday.

The sexual assault trial against a Silicon Valley mogul screeched to a halt Wednesday when his wife, who accuses of him of raping her with a golf putter and chaining her to bed, stormed out of the courtroom.

A weeping Ellena Berg, 37, fled the witness stand as the prosecutor asked her to tell what happened last September, when her 74-year-old husband Clyde Berg allegedly poked a handgun in her face, forced her to wear a spiked dog collar and chained her to a bed while she was nine months pregnant with another man’s child.

After a long silence, the woman burst into tears and said, “I feel an overwhelming sense of paralysis and shame,” before striding out and leaving the northern California courthouse.

Lawyers were stunned, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Judge Ron Del Pozzo adjourned the preliminary hearing until 1:30 p.m. PDT Thursday.

If Ellena Berg doesn’t show, the judge said he most likely will throw out the case because it relies mostly on testimony from her and her husband.

Clyde Berg denies ever abusing the Swedish woman he married 10 years ago while she was working as an au pair for a local family. Wednesday’s walkout was the most bizarre occurence to date in a case that has no shortage of oddities.

On Tuesday, Ellena Berg testified the couple married so she could stay in the U.S.

She signed a restrictive prenuptial agreement with Berg, whose net worth is estimated at more than $200 million. His brother and business partner is Carl Berg, one of the wealthiest men in the country. The brothers recently sold their real estate development firm for $1.3 billion.

Clyde Berg is charged with with two felony counts: corporal punishment of a spouse and penetration by a foreign object while the victim is tied and bound.

The collective sentence could be more than 15 years to life.

Ellena Berg has also filed a civil suit seeking monetary damages.

She contends physical and sexual abuse were always part of their marriage.

Last fall, police summoned by a 911 call found her bloodied and handcuffed to a bed in the couple’s posh home overlooking a golf course.

She told officers she had been able to call because she had stashed a cellphone under the mattress. But her hands were cuffed behind her back.

Her husband contends she is making false claims to get money from him.
