A shoeless seven-year-old boy was found alone and walking in the street outside the home of a woman his father had ‘picked up’ on a late night drive to get petrol.

The 31-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, avoided a stint in prison as magistrates heard he left his son in the car all night when he followed the woman inside.

Neighbours woke shortly after 6.30am hearing the boy crying in the street, calling for his father to return.

Wirral Magistrates’ Court were told yesterday the father left his home in Moreton to get petrol.

But instead he drove to Birkenhead where he stopped and offered a woman, who had been on a night out, a lift home as she tried in vain to hail a taxi.

He followed the woman inside leaving his son alone in the car.

Amanda Cullen, prosecuting at Wirral magistrates’ court, said: ‘At around 6.40am on September 28 a neighbour was in bed when she was woken by the sound of a crying noise from outside the address, which was the sound of a child crying.’

After noticing the boy in the street alone, the neighbour went to see what had happened.

Ms Cullen added: ‘He seemed scared, the passenger door to the car was open. She looked up and down the road but didn’t see any adult.

‘She tried to reassure the child because he was crying for his dad.

‘She tried to get him talking but could see he was quite scared because his eyes were red from crying.’

A second neighbour then carried him inside and called the police.

When officers arrived, the boy’s father appeared, claiming his son had walked out of an address on the street.

But when he failed to point out which address, he told police he had been out stealing in the area.

He then admitted picking up the woman and going back to her home where they ‘watched TV’, claiming he checked on his son regularly.

The woman said at no point had she known there was a child in the car.

Sinead Fearon, defending, said: ‘He is completely remorseful for his actions and knows how stupid he has been.’

The father pleaded guilty to child neglect.

Sentencing him, chairman of the bench Jillian Kirkbride-Wright said she was ‘shocked and appalled’ by the case.

She sentenced him to 12 weeks in prison, but suspended the sentence for 18 months. She ordered he carry out 180 hours of unpaid work and placed him on a curfew.
