@yemiikuforiji to launch governorship bid on Sunday

by Simon Ateba

The speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, will formally launch his governorship bid on Sunday, 26 October, at the Blue Roof, LTV 8, Ikeja, Lagos, ‎his campaign office have announced.

Ikuforiji, who is the longest serving speaker in the country since the return to democracy in 1999, said in a recent interview that his experience places him above other contestants.

He said he is bringing to the table a better deal for Lagos residents‎, and expressed optimism that the leadership of the party would back him. Asides creating jobs from tourism and knowledge-based economy among other things, Mr. Ikuforiji has pledged that if given the chance, his government will spend more money on key areas of the society. This, he said, would bring employment opportunities for the youths.

He is not the only aspirant who’s trying to replace Governor ‎Babatunde Fashola whose term expires on 29 May next year.

Many other aspirants have picked up nomination forms and are gearing up to slug it out on 15 November when the All Progressives Congress’ primaries take place.

For now, there’s no sign that a consensus candidate for the APC has emerged, though political analysts say things would become clearer in the next few days. If a primary election does take place, more than 11,000 delegates from about 377 wards and local government areas will elect the flag bearer of the party.
