#YNaija2013Review: Iyanya spills on Yvonne Nelson, Tonto Dikeh admits to skin bleaching & more Top 10 Rubbin’ Minds moments in 2013

Rubbin' Minds Host Ebuka Obi Uchendu

In 2013 Rubbin Minds became the most watched show on Sunday television thanks in no small part to current host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and his peculiar manner of drawing out the dirt from the most tight lipped of guests. Some were hilarious, some were shocking, some were cringe inducing. Either ways they set the tongues wagging, influenced the culture and shaped further discussions.

We present 10 of the most memorable moments from this year’s Rubbin Minds season.

10) Davido reveals there was no slap

The Omo baba olowo himself was on the hot seat early in the year and did his best to clear up some of those pesky controversies that had been trailing him at that point in his life. Like if he was at the giving or receiving end of a slap, and why he fancies assaulting cab drivers.

9) Beverly Osu makes her first television appearance post-Big Brother Africa

Now this was more hype than substance as Miss Osu did not really admit going all the way with her South African ex flame Angelo (and that was really why we tuned in). Still it was a biggie as it marked her first television appearance since leaving The Chase. We needed to confirm if she would still be our queen of hearts or if we would send her to whatever happened to status- by way of Karen Igho. Well now we know.

8) Tonto Dikeh admits to bleaching her skin

Where Toke Makinwa was demure and defensive, Tonto Dikeh was frank and open, admitting to using skin lightening oils to give her skin that glow that you know you envy. She also down played those Iyanya rumors, insisting she barely knew the guy.

7) Omawumi says her baby daddy’s identity “no concern you”

Whenever Omawumi grants an interview, the discussion is sure to come around to the matter of her daughter and baby daddy. This one did and Obi-Uchendu went in hard trying to pry the answers out of her. She gave as good as she got though and parried the questions like a pro, letting the unrelenting host know exactly how much of her private life was his business.

6) Iyanya would die for Yvonne Nelson, dust off Tonto Dikeh

Truth be told, if Tonto Dikeh was icy cool about Iyanya, then it was only because he forced her hand. In a much buzzed about previous episode, the Kukere master squealed to Obi-Uchendu that he would dine with Genevieve Nnaji, die for Yvonne Nelson and dust off Tonto Dikeh. Ouch! That had to hurt, even someone as thick-skinned as Miss #Poko

5) Toke Makinwa won’t say if she bleaches her skin

Ms Makinwa may have been the breakout star of 2013 but she was not amused when an unsmiling Ebuka asked her the one question everyone really wants answered. Does she bleach her skin? She mumbled through a response but rumours have it she stormed out of the Channels tv studios in a hissy fit.

4) Dino Melaye questions the source of Obi Uchendu’s anointing

Controversial ex-lawmaker and self-styled activist Dino Melaye was in the studios to discuss the aviation minister’s scandalous 255 million Naira car purchase. Like most common folk, he was outraged by the sheer insensitivity of the purchase and when the host tried to play devil’s advocate, Melaye quickly let him have it, declaring at some point, “I don’t know where you are getting your inspiration and anointing from” and at another, “it seems like you are a senior advocate of the minister”.

3) The ‘yoots’ who run the NYCN are unmasked, (and they are not that young)

The protracted crisis over the election of new leaders for the National Youth Council of Nigeria imploded earlier in the year with the sack of the minister for youth development. On Rubbin’ Minds, we spoke with some of the players involved and it wasn’t pretty. Turns out the men who run the NYCN are not really youths but middle aged men who are unable to uncouple themselves from power. Shame.

2) Twitter overlords in the building

It was a rowdy session when 3 of Twitter’s much touted overlords appeared in the same room to discuss the state of the nation. The controversies began immediately the tapes stopped rolling. Omojuwa was accused of desecrating Gani Fawehinmi’s memory, Chinedu Ekekee was too cool for school and then there was the matter of Olusegun Dada’s ill-fitting shirt. The relationship between ChannelsTV and Omojuwa was never the same after this episode.

1) Wacomzy talks and talks and (can’t stop talking)

It was a pretty mundane interview with singer Wacomzy until he was asked a seemingly innocent question by Ebuka. To everyone’s shock (and perverse pleasure), he responded with a long winded rant, taking down everyone from Olamide to Davido and Tonto Dikeh. It was weird, and shocking. It was a ratings fest and Twitter responded in like manner. If only other celebrities were this frank.

Let’s not forget

Other moments that got a lot of people glued to their screens according to YouTube statistics are Chika Ike’s near-tell all where she revealed she left her marriage because it wasn’t working, Y! magazine cover star Toolz’s sit down in which she spilled the beans on her relationship status and Mode 9 and Ikechukwu’s cerebral discussions on the state of hip hop in Nigeria.
