#YNaija2016Review: Gbemi vs the Olumofins, Linda vs Wizkid, FFK vs Jimoh… See our Top 10 social media fights of 2016

by Okon Ekpo

We love a good knock, down drag out tumble in the dirt. Even more so when it plays out on social media and the contestants are some of our favourite people. We were willing spectators to these 10 online feuds.

  1. Ben Murray-Bruce vs Feyi Fawehinmi

In truth, this was more of a clap back than a feud. Common Sense Minister Ben Murray-Bruce in another desperate attempt to pander, tweeted something about Nigerians needing to appoint young people as ministers. Newspaper columnist and blogger @DoubleEph let him know (rudely too) just where to shove it. This was the exchange.

  1. Bukola Saraki vs Sahara Reporters

Sometime in June Sahara Reporters published a story alleging that Senator Bukola Saraki was fleeced of about 300million Naira right in his bedroom. According to the report, domestic aides and an accountant were arrested by the police. Saraki, engulfed by one scandal too many took to Twitter to refute. He accused Sahara Reporters, long the bane of his existence, of lacking any credibility and going to extreme lengths for click bait.

  1. Rotimi Amaechi vs Ben Murray-Bruce

The Common Sense Senator and the Minister for Transport engaged in a Twitter drag down when Murray-Bruce in rejecting Buhari’s criminal tag on Nigerians accused a certain serving Minister of spending 80million Naira on a single dinner. Amaechi caught his sub and called Murray-Bruce a coward, challenging him to be bold enough to name the minister. The Senator mocked Amaechi for losing Rivers state to the PDP and Amaechi claimed he wouldn’t respond to innuendos.

  1. Nigeria vs Kenya

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s visit to Africa was only the primer for the battle Royale that surfaced on Twitter between Nigeria and Kenya. This beef was a battle for supremacy, a pissing contest, a struggle for pop culture domination and a laugh out loud exercise in creativity.

  1. Gbemi Olateru Olagbegi vs The Olumofin brothers

As preparations for the wedding of Tolu ‘Toolz’ Oniru  and Tunde Demuren hit high gear, OAP Gbemi Olateru Olagbegi tweeted something about Lagos wedding crashers. The Olumofin brothers who have never said no to a good Lagos wedding took it personal and Dokun DK, one half of the duo went on a screen shot laced, Instagram meltdown that was petty, misogynistic, abusive and filled with profanity. Depending on who you talk to, the brothers may or may not have been bounced from the January wedding as a direct result of this showdown.

  1. Molara Wood vs Oby Ezekwesili

From the comfort of her privileged existence, the author and editor Molara Wood sought to dictate to anguished parents of Chibok how to mourn and demand action from their government. Dismissing their antics as overwrought and staged, she opined that their tears were beginning to lose impact. Oby Ezekwesili, who has devoted significant effort and energy to the #BBOG let her have it. The back and forth soon involved Twitter stans, fans and supporters of the two women and it degenerated into a rofo rofo fight about respect and achievements.

  1. Femi Fani-Kayode vs. Jimoh Ibrahim

Jimoh Ibrahim tried to be governor of Ondo state. We know how that ended. Back when he still had a fighting chance, he and Femi Fani-Kayode engaged in a Twitter free for all. FFK accused ‘’Jimoh the pig’’ of being a sodomite, ritualist and spoiler, promising him a date with the EFCC after 2019.  After the PDP candidate Eyitayo Jegede lost the Ondo state guber poll, Jimoh Ibrahim went a trolling on Twitter streets blaming Jegede’s loss on FFK’s hot streak of supporting losing candidates.

  1. Linda Ikeji vs Wizkid

Our favourite blogger and pop star were at each other’s throats for the first part of the year. Ikeji did an expose detailing that Wizkid’s so called property in Lekki was actually a rental and the original Starboy was having none of it, going on a misogynistic rant on Ikeji’s page and threatening her with physical violence. Ikeji stood by her post and went straight to the Commissioner of Police who summoned the two to settle their beef.

  1. Dele Momodu vs Davido vs Sophie Momodu

Davido and Ovation magazine boss Dele Momodu were involved in perhaps the first major scuffle of 2016. At stake was the custody rights to the baby Davido had with Momodu’s niece Sophie. Starting in the twilight of 2015, Momodu opened the can of worms when he let it all out on social media. Davido responded with aplomb even going on to record a diss verse for the duo on the remix to Humblesmith’s massive single Osinachi.

  1. Aisha Buhari vs. Ayo Fayose

Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state has been after President Buhari for a long time. But while he always meets an unyielding barrier in the president’s affect towards him, he changed strategy and turned to Aisha Buhari instead, accusing her of money laundering practices as specified in the Halliburton scandal papers. The first lady who is usually a model in poise, fired off on Twitter, declaring her battle ready skills while calling Fayose a “mad dog that isn’t chained.” She deleted the tweets.
