Zika virus: China confirms first case

Asian giant, China, with a population of over 1.3 billion, has confirmed its first case of the dreaded Zika virus.

The virus was said to have been brought into the country by an unnamed 34-year-old man, who recently returned from a trip to South American country- Venezuela.

The man, report says, is from Ganxian county in the eastern province of Jiangxi. He had traveled through Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and was on his way home.

However, Chinese authorities are reported to have downplayed the spreading of the virus because of the winter cold. furthermore, because there was little human contact, the disease is not expected to spread.

The man is reported to be under quarantine in a hospital in his hometown, where he is said to be recovering.

Zika is a viral infection that is mosquito-borne, which has in recent weeks, spread through much of South America, especially Brazil, where about 1.5 million people have been infected. About 24 South American countries have so far recorded the disease.

The viral infection has been linked to birth defects that is characterized by an abnormally small head and developmental problems.

On Febuary 1, the World Health Organization declared Zika an international health emergency.
