US set to return $458m of Abacha’s loot – AGF

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Salihu Isah on Sunday revealed that the United States of America was planning to return $458 million looted and kept in the country by the General Sani Abacha administration.

He said the U.S. Department of Justice, through its U.S. Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative in 2013 had started the process of confiscating $550 million looted by the former military leader.

He further said $458m of the said amount will now be sent back after the United States District Court for the District of Columbia passed its final judgement.

He also said a U.S. based Nigerian lawyer, Godson Nnaka has laid claim to some portion of the assets, for legal services allegedly rendered to Nigeria.

According to the U.S., the assets were in multiple locations and a final judgement would be needed for their retrieval back to Nigeria.
