ASUU threatens strike over unresolved salary and welfare issues
University lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have threatened to resume their nationwide strike if the government fails to resolve outstanding issues.
The union said it could restart the action without notice over incomplete implementation of its December 2025 agreement, payment of 3.5 months’ withheld salaries and unpaid deductions from lecturers’ wages.
Following an emergency meeting in Abuja, ASUU President Christopher Piwuna said the agreement followed years of negotiations but remained partly unimplemented. The union warned that without urgent action on academics’ welfare, it would not accept blame for another nationwide strike.
NLC gives FCT seven days to resolve teachers’ disputes
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council has given the Federal Capital Territory Administration seven days to resolve three issues affecting teachers or face an indefinite strike.
The ultimatum, dated September 8, was addressed to the FCT Minister and signed by NLC FCT Chairman Knabayi S. Adalo. The dispute follows protests over using vacancies as a condition for teachers’ promotion.
The union is also demanding proper implementation of the 2022 retirement law, which allows teachers to retire at 65 or after 40 years of service. A July 2026 court ruling further stated that the eight-year directors’ tenure policy could not override the law.
Peter Obi refuses to step down for Atiku ahead of the 2027 election
Peter Obi has ruled out stepping down for Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying opposition alliances must now be decided by political parties.
Speaking on Arise Television, Obi said he and Atiku are presidential candidates of separate parties, making the issue bigger than either man personally withdrawing. He compared the situation to two corporations seeking to merge.
His comments come amid efforts by opposition leaders to unite against President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress. Obi, Atiku and other opposition figures had backed the African Democratic Congress as a coalition platform in 2025, raising hopes of another alliance.

Adekunle Gold has shared how writing a song for Beyoncé turned into an emotional experience after the death of his father. Speaking to One54 Africa, the singer recalled being excited to write for Beyoncé, whom he considers his “GOAT”, in 2019.
However, his father’s death deeply affected him and made him lose interest in the song. The track remained unreleased for six years as it became linked to a painful period in his life.
The song was eventually released in 2025 and is now part of Gold’s album. He said its journey reflects how music can take on new meaning as artistes heal and grow.
Dolly Parton’s voice returns in a posthumous single two weeks after death
Just under two weeks after her passing, Dolly Parton has delivered new music from beyond the grave. The country icon lends her voice to “Bound to Ride” on a fresh tribute record honouring bluegrass legends The Stanley Brothers, out next month.
Parton laid down her vocals back in 2022, sidestepping studio risks during a COVID surge. Fiddle player Becky Buller stepped in to guide the arrangement, singing a demo so Parton could nail her key from a distance.
The track also brings together bluegrass heavyweights known as the First Ladies of Bluegrass, cementing Parton’s final gift to the genre she loved.
