A Case for the Chelsea-Manchester United Ties

Ifreke Inyang

If you ask the football purists, Chelsea versus Manchester United is not the marquee tie they prayed for. They’d have loved Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid to face their arch enemies Barcelona, or indeed one of his former clubs, Inter Milan or Chelsea. This will not be the case, at least for the quarter-finals of the 2010/2011 Champions League competition.

Instead, everyone will attempt to live on the hype of an all English tie, which without arguments is still a clash to look forward to. Although when the draws were made Friday afternoon, we all anticipated bigger clashes, Chelsea and Manchester United are still European heavyweights on all scales. The importance and relevance of the clash will be heightened by Alex Ferguson’s recent 5-match ban. A punishment imposed after his rant against the referee in their Premier League clash earlier this month. You can expect the three fixtures (Chelsea go to Old Trafford in the League) to be explosive.

Having said so, Barcelona should breeze past Shakhtar, Inter faces a tricky tie against German underdogs, Schalke 04, while Mourinho returns to his beloved England to play Tottenham Hotspurs.

In my opinion, I expect Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan to progress to the semi-finals. Or what do you think?

Madrid v Spurs;
Chelsea v ManUtd;

  2. This is football anytin can happen…its possible we have 2 english team in d semi

  3. Well i see I see Barca and Inter thru to the semis already and Madrid shud be well prepared for Spurs. But matches btw Man Utd and Chelsea are somewhat unpredictable.. We'll just have to wait and see.

  4. I'm thinking Chelsea, Madrid, Barca and Inter

  5. naa. i expect chelsea to qualify ahead of manu.. im a fan of niether, but i just dont feel manu has enough to beat chelsea over two legs.as much as i admire what rooney and chicharito are doing, i just dont think manu's all round performance is enough. barcelona, inter definitly. real madrid's trip to spurs is also a very tricky one. the lightning pace of bale and lenon cud cause problems for the real madrid full backs. marcelo wud av a horrid time if hes not careful. we al kno the effect of the mourinho factor, but not withstanding, i doubt if its goin to be a walk in the park for him.. also taking into consideration mourihno's history with spurs and redknapp's vast experience in the game.. its a good draw all together. may the best team win

  6. yea i see those teams go tru to the semis…Bless
