Boko Haram gunmen kill policemen, burn churches in Borno

by Isi Esene

In what is now becoming a weekly orgy of violence, gunmen suspected to be members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, yesterday killed at-least two police officers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Residents said about 50 men in cars and on motorcycles carried out a raid in the town burning three churches in the process and attacking border posts.

They were said to have opened fire on policemen and shouting Allahu Akbar (God is Greatest).

Sources say among the security posts burnt in the Sunday’s attack were offices of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerian Customs Service and the State Security Service as well as a quarantine building in Gamboru Ngala, about 140 kilometres from Maiduguri.

One of the residents, Sani Kani, who spoke to newsmen said, “I saw two bodies in police uniform not far from the police station. One of them was sprawled by the roadside while the other was seated in a police van,”

Another eyewitness reportedly to newsmen that it was not immediately clear whether worshippers were in the churches at the time of the attacks.

The police and Nigerian Army authorities are yet to officially confirm this attack.
