BREAKING: Senate orders NCC to halt data tariff increase

The Senate has ordered the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to halt the planned increase of prices for data.

The Senate gave the order on Wednesday after a motion raised by the Deputy Senate Leader, Ibn N’Allah.

In a statement on its official Twitter account, @NGRSenate, the upper chamber condemn the action of the regulatory agency.

It reads, “Senators in all totality condemned the increase of data tariffs by the service providers in tandem with NCC.

“Senate now resolves to halt the new tariff approval.

“Senate mandates the Committee on Communications to carry out thorough oversight on the process to ensure that Nigerians are carried along in the process.

“Senate also mandates the Committee on Communications to ensure that Nigerians are not short changed.

“Senate further mandates the Committee on Communications to investigate the allegations of failure of the service providers.”

While speaking on the matter, Senate President, Bukola Saraki said the plan by the NCC was highly irresponsible.

“It is very important that we protect the people that brought us here this is the height of irresponsibility by the NCC. Senators in all totality condemn the increase of data tariffs by the service providers in tandem with NCC, at this time without any consultation, from the statistics it is almost four times the price”.

The NCC had ordered telecom operators to increase data tariffs by over 300 per cent from December 1.
