The Film Blog: 5 things we know about the sequel to The Wedding Party

So EbonyLife Films is at work prepping a sequel (of course) to The Wedding Party and while the movie is a long way off from getting released, there are a couple of things we know for sure, now.

1. It follows older brother of Dozie, Nonso (played by Enyinna Nwigwe) and Dunni’s caucasian friend, Dierdre. (Funny, there’s another Nigerian film featuring a wedding and an interracial couple coming out in just under 2 months.)

2. It’s set in Dubai – or at least a significant part of the film will be taking place there. Besides the fact of it being a shrewd business move (given sponsorship considerations, and all) it’s sure to add a fun dynamism to the proceedings.

3. Expect more of the same – with a twist. The crux of the film will likely be culture clashes again. But while with The Wedding Party with was “intra-national” (Yoruba-Igbo tensions) with this movie, it looks to be Nigerian (Onwukas) vs British (Deirdre’s “upper-crust” family)

4. It starts shooting in a week (on May 1).

5. It will make loads of cash. Gird your loins. No word yet on a release date, but fully expect this to set the box office on fire whenever it happens.

And a bonus

6. It will be released around Christmas time. But that’s just our guess!

The official synopsis: The Wedding Party 2 is the sequel to the highest-grossing film in the history of Nigerian cinema. In the original film, notorious bachelor Dozie marries Dunni, a virgin until her wedding day. Against a chaotic and hilarious backdrop of family squabbles and damaging stag-night revelations, they finally say, “I do”. In the sequel, the groom’s brother, Nonso, has continued his romance with Deirdre, the bridesmaid from London. Somehow, Nonso manages to propose by accident, while on a dinner date, and sets off a chain of events too powerful to stop. Deirdre’s upper-crust British family are against the match, as are some members of the Nigerian clan, but Deirdre’s determination can’t be contained. After a near-disastrous introduction ceremony in Lagos and Nigerian opposition to a London wedding, both families reluctantly agree to a wedding in Dubai, setting us off on another colourful, chaotic and memorable journey to everlasting love.
