The Film Blog: We have questions about this ‘Lotanna’ movie

We’re hesitant to join the crew of Nigerians who complain about “Nigerians” but sometimes it does feel that only Nigerians can let some things happen.

Seriously, where else but Nigeria could this Lotanna movie madness be happening with no questions asked?

In 2013, Ifan Ifeanyi Michael (abi is it Ifeanyi Ifan Michael? it changes everyday) released a slew of pictures to BellaNaija showing the behind the scenes process of shooting a movie he was producing (and, apparently acting in too) called ‘Lotanna’.

Look at the date. 4th of January 2013.

Okay.

In the months that followed, Ifan proceeded to launch a personal website, cover a slew of magazines (no idea how he does it, really) and announce a magazine of his own. All of this while he refused to let anyone forget about the existence of the movie by using the hashtags #LotannaTheMovie and #Coming Soon wherever he could.

Then.

2015.

2 years after, the silence was broken and he finally released a teaser for the movie. With it came no word on the actual release of the movie, but at least the instagram hashtags were consistent.

Then.

Silence.

Again.

Until he finally launched his magazine, 2 years after it was originally launched, with a glitzy event where the magazine itself was nowhere to be found.

And now. November 2016. Almost 3 full years since the movie was originally announced, a new trailer drops. Oh, did we mention that he’s recently released new behind the scenes photos, from a 2016 shoot for the same film? Okay. Maybe a release could finally be on the horizon?

Maybe. But we have some questions.

Why does the trailer look completely different? Where did Beverly Naya go? Where did Meg Otanwa come from? Where is Ireti Doyle? What is Liz Benson doing here? Why is the movie credited to an ENTIRELY NEW DIRECTOR (Toka Mcbaror as opposed to George Sunom Kura, who was credited before and actually pictured on set?)

Did this guy go and shoot a whole different movie? And if so, why isn’t he bothering to explain anything? What the hell is going on here?

No. Sorry. We want answers.
