How Ajimobi won governorship election in Oyo – Tokyo is out of jail and singing like a bird

The ex-chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Oyo State, Lateef Akinsola, has given an insight into how the victory of the incumbent governor of the state, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, was achieved during the 2011 elections.

Akinsola, popularly known as Tokyo, said Ajimobi’s victory was only possible because of the disagreement he had with the the immediate past governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala.

He posited that the withdrawal of Senator Rasheed Ladoja, also an ex-governor of the state, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contributed immensely to the victory of Ajimobi.

Tokyo was responding to a statement reportedly released by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) state publicity secretary, Dauda Kolawole, who had asked him to justify his claim that he assisted the ruling party in winning the election.

In the statement, Tokyo was described as “a frustrated man who is attempting to clutch at straw and reap where he did not sow.”

Hammid Yusuff, who released a statement on Tokyo’s behalf, explained Akinsola’s position saying, “But for the break-away of Ladoja and the formation of Accord Party, which aligned with the ACN to form the present government, Ajimobi’s hope of becoming Oyo State governor would have been a pipe-dream.”

Tokyo also claimed to have rescued the governor and the late ACN leader, Lam Adesina from thugs at Oluyole Local Government Area of the state during the campaign.

According to Tokyo’s statement, “The statement credited to Dauda Kolawole is larger than his mouth and a larger load for him to carry.

“The best thing he should have done before uttering such ill-advised statement is for him to have gone to the elders of the party to learn the history instead of writing derogatory statement against Alhaji Lateef Akinsola, who everybody in the state knows the extent of his sacrifice and energy to assist Ajimobi to win at the poll.”

The statement described Kolawole as “a political opportunist, who knew very little about the evolution of the ACN in the state.”

Tokyo said his contribution to the election victory of Ajimobi cannot be denied no matter how hard the ACN tries.

The ACN had thrown a challenge at the former Chairman of NURTW to explain how he contributed to the success of ACN in the state in the 2011 elections.
