“I don’t see same-sex marriage in the Scripture” – Joel Osteen makes it plain

Joel Osteen Continues to Lead Lakewood Church Onward and Upward

Televangelist and Megachurch pastor Joel Osteen believes marriage is between a man and a woman, period. The prominent pastor cited the bible in a television appearance this week, defending his point of view.

Appearing on CNN’s “The Lead With Jake Tapper,” Osteen, who pastors Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, said he doesn’t support gay marriage. The host of the show, Jake Tapper, asked Osteen what were his views were on gay marriage and whether gay marital partners should be afforded the same rights as other couples.

Osteen replied, “You know, Jake, it’s a fine line. We’re for everybody. But of course as a Christian pastor, my base is off what I believe the Scripture says.” Osteen added, “Marriage is between a male and female. Again we’re for everybody, but that’s where I draw the line.”

“I think we have to be compassionate about it all,” Osteen added when asked about gay couples having hospital visitation rights. “We’re not against everybody. There are certainly people that love each other and I believe they should have those rights.”

However, he continued, “When I’ve come back to the Scripture, as much as I am for everybody, I don’t see same-sex [marriage] in the Scripture.”

However, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t allow gay couples to worship in his Houston church.

Osteen is a consultant on the History Channel’s series “The Bible.” The series is an unbelievable success. More than 10 million people watched last week’s episode. Nearly 14 million watched the debut.

Osteen is not surprised by the success.

“There are a lot of people of faith still in our country and when somebody takes a step of faith like Mark and Roma Downey (co-executive producer) did, people want to get behind it” says Osteen.

Tapper asked Osteen about the comments of some people who thought that the character of Satan appearing in “The Bible” looked like President Obama. Osteen said that it was nonsense and that, “People can draw funny conclusions.”

  1. @ suleiman,thanks so much. That’s my exact stand

  2. To me religious or otherwise,i see same sex marriage as an abomination and a slight to human race dignity. Even animals do not engage in same sex, talk more of humans, who are considered to be higher and more social beings. That is to say humans have stoop so low compare to their rightful place given to them by the creator.
