This Week In Music: Timaya’s ”2 Stoopid,” Niniola’s ”Boda Sodiq,” Mr Eazi’s ”Supernova,” and more

Because he has nothing better to do with his time, each Sunday, Bernard Dayo brings you the most awe-inspiring, confounding, addictive, or otherwise hilarious moments from the week in music. This week:

Naira Marley’s ”Soapy” is about male masturbation…well most of it

Three things: First, Soapy is Naira Marley’s first single out from prison and sees him return to his goofy-boy mischievous. Second, the song is somewhat moulded from his experience in prison on the allegation of internet fraud and YES, it’s about male masturbation. Third, Marley did a clip following the song’s release showing how to do the ”Soapy dance,” which primarily involves one imagining holding a penis and stroking it rhythmically. As much as I hate to admit it, the imagery used for the song’s cover art is…brilliant. If you know, you know.

The two sides of Niniola’s ”Boda Sodiq”

Collaborating with Kel P rather than her musical sidekick producer Sarz, Niniola manufactures another airy, lush, and enchanting single Boda Sodiq – about post-alcohol sex but the lyrics comes under scrutiny under the current atmosphere of rape and sexual assault when Niniola sings: ”Boys Quarters, what happened in your boys quarters / Did you have to gbemi lo le.”

A man taking Niniola home while she’s inebriated and having sex with her is disturbing. Or may be I’m just reaching. Nevertheless, it’s still an afro-house jam to bop to.

It’s all about the chorus on Mr Eazi’s ”Supenova”

In his first single of 2019, Mr Eazi proves he his the master of insidiously infectious choruses on Supernova, wherein he professes love to his love interest and spoiling her. Lovely animation work for the video too.

Everything about Timaya’s ”2 Stoopid” video

You’d think Timaya’s latest single 2 Stoopid would have a shambolic video for the purpose of aligning with the song’s frivolousness as an aesthetic. Surprise, surprise, the video is immaculately attractive and structured while still being a fun song. I’m still playing it on a loop. Send help.
