UBA denies housing $2 billion used to execute failed Turkey coup

Following claims by a Turkish newspaper, Yeni Şafak that United Bank for Africa (UBA) was employed to transit $2 billion used to execute the botched Turkey coup, the bank has said it has no connections whatsoever to the incident.

The newspaper had accused General John F. Campbella former U.S. commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), of being the mastermind of the July 15 military coup attempt in Turkey.

It also cited undisclosed sources who revealed that a Nigerian branch of UBA was the coup plotters main base for money transactions in the last six months.

The bank has however released a statement saying that it had nothing to do with the accusations.

It said, “UBA is aware of the on-going and spurious media speculation linking our institution to recent events in Turkey. In light of this we believe it is necessary to categorically state that UBA has no involvement in or connection to these accusations, which are clearly false.

“We remain focused and firmly committed to delivering on our strategy to build Africa’s premier banking institution.”
