Aisha Buhari may have just confirmed what we only dared to think

The ‘scratch my back I scratch yours’ game that characterizes the business of politics in Nigeria is another one of those things that we consider to be just as horrible as they are Nigerian. We do not particularly appreciate it but it’s just another one of those things. It’s like the vicious houseflies that hover around your favourite Buka’s casserole.

Nearly every politician you know owes one or two of the big men favours. An we only say nearly because the votes aren’t in yet on whether or not Babatunde Raji Fashola was obviously bias in favour of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu during his time as the governor of Lagos.

Now with President Buhari, even though it was against our better judgment, we have chosen to believe that he is the one exception to the general rule being the poster person for integrity and all. That is until very recently when we started to draw the semblance of a pattern.

Here’s what we were thinking: So President Buhari had always appeared to have a solid relationship with the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and those who were not particularly friendly with the latter could have safely been considered unfriendly with the President too. Let’s take Senate President Saraki for example. Saraki and Tinubu haven’t particularly been best of friends even though they are both APC members. This was the situation when the forgery case was instituted against him and his deputy months ago.

When the matter was withdrawn against them last week, Tinubu and the President’s relationship was already showing signs of strain. And even though Tinubu released a statement that said he was happy with the withdrawal, we suspect he felt differently. But that’s not even the point here. Now that the matter has been dropped against them, we see the Saraki-led Senate shutting down a motion to investigate President Buhari’s recent judges’ houses raids while the lower chamber has gone ahead to set up a committee to investigate the same incidents.

You can tell that the theory is still very skeletal and we were content to hold off expressing our thoughts until this interview granted by the President’s wife changed everything!

She’s reported to have done an interview with the BBC Hausa recently where she expressed her discontent with the fact that her husband might not be free to deliver all his campaign promises to the people because of all the favours he feels compelled to return to party members who claim they helped him get the position.

Although the BBC is yet release the interview, transcripts of a clip that has gone viral quote her as saying that the President only knows about five of his own appointed ministers.

If this is true and the President actually has to repay a lot of favours, we might as well ready ourselves for a remainder of a term dependent on how fast he can satisfy his allies and sponsors. Moving on.

  1. As we cannot but acknowledge Godfatherism in Nigerian politics and Democracy as it is. Can Mr president make a deal or cut it. Time is of essence here as little or nothing is being achieved with His perceived “trying to do the right thing”. If you are going to ball, just ball and lets move on rather than this “some people are trying to jeopardize my integrity movement” so i’m stalling on all decision making. The situation is dicey yeah, but the people are left to suffer these Elephants fight.
