Tems (Temilade Openiyi) had an extraordinary 2024, further solidifying her status as one of the most captivating artists of her generation. Her journey this year was marked by groundbreaking achievements, critically acclaimed music, and electrifying performances that left an indelible mark on the global music scene.
In March, Tems achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first African artist to win the Billboard Women in Music Award for Breakthrough Artist. This accolade was a testament to her influence and the boundaries she continues to push for African music on the global stage.
June brought the release of her highly anticipated debut studio album, Born in the Wild. The album resonated deeply with audiences worldwide, charting impressively in the UK, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the U.S., where it became the highest-charting album by a Nigerian female artist. Tracks like “Love Me JeJe,” which she first teased during her breathtaking Coachella debut in April, and “Burning,” a deeply soulful piece, quickly became fan favorites.
Tems also delivered exceptional performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and a memorable Tiny Desk Concert. She followed this with her Born in the Wild world tour, captivating audiences across Europe, North America, and Africa. Her homecoming performances in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt were especially poignant, underscoring her deep connection to her roots.
As the year drew to a close, Tems received three Grammy nominations for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. Her debut album earned a nomination for Best Global Music Album, while “Burning” was nominated for Best R&B Song, and “Love Me JeJe” for Best African Music Performance. These nominations went on to prove her prowess in the music industry.
From record-breaking achievements to delivering music that resonates with audiences worldwide, Tems’ 2024 was nothing short of extraordinary. She continues to blaze trails, combining talent, artistry, and authenticity to captivate listeners and set new standards for African artists globally.
