13 militants dead after shootout with navy

In a brazen show of force, men of the Nigerian Navy, early this morning, engaged a group of militants in a shootout and prevailed.

The early morning attack occurred when the militants attempted to hijack the Navy vessel MT NOTRE. The vessel carrying 17,000 metric tonnes of petrol was attacked by the armed militants in the Gulf of Guinea.

In the process of recovering the vessel, the officers and men of the Nigerian Navy shot dead 13 of the militants, who engaged them in a gun battle.

The shootout reportedly lasted over 30 minutes.
