Penn, who was also married to Madonna for four years, told the magazine that divorce made him realise the truth about his relationship with the 46-year-old Princess Bride actress.
‘When you get divorced, all the truths that come out, you sit there and you go, “What the f*** was I doing? What was I doing believing that this person was invested in this way?” Which is a fantastically strong humiliation in the best sense,’ he said.
‘It can make somebody very bitter and very hard and closed off, but I find it does the opposite to me.’
The single stud has romanced numerous beauties over the years, including models Brigitte Nielsen, Petra Nemcova, Jessica White, and actress Scarlett Johansson.
The Sweet and Lowdown actor was last linked to 27-year-old producer Shannon Costello, who served as the former communications director for Penn’s J/P Haitian Relief Organization, but the pair split in September 2011.

Penn will next be seen alongside Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the long-delayed crime-drama, Gangster Squad, due out January 11.
Sean’s ripped bod does not appear to be for a role as his next two film projects will have him behind the camera.
He’ll soon direct Josh Brolin in the drama Crazy for the Storm, and he’ll also direct Robert DeNiro and Kristen Wiig in The Comedian.
