Women aren’t the only ones scared of heartbreak. Men may not show it — or they may, in a terrible, soppy, clingy way for which I apologise deeply — but that explains why men seem standoff-ish in the beginning of a new relationship.

1. We Like Aggressive Women
Call us, take us out for dinner, heck, dress us up for that dinner (because most men are clueless about clothes and really don’t like taking a bath). Men love women who take charge, especially when that includes rustling up a meal, giving us an ultimatum about our dentist appointment and surprising us with hugs that squeeze the air out of us.

2. Yes, we love hugs
Especially the sort mentioned above. Men also adore butterfly hugs, cloudy kisses, arm hugs, side hugs, stomach rubs, back pats, hair ruffling, shoulder punches, canoodling and cuddling up.

3. We’re Mortified you’ll leave us
Women aren’t the only ones scared of heartbreak. We’re not commitment phobic, we’re just being cautious until you tell us where we stand in your little black book.

4. Please don’t starve yourself 
It doesn’t impress us when you pick at the food. Nor is it fun when we only go to restaurants that serve salads and coin-sized main courses. Me man, me like meat. We don’t watch Nigella Lawson’s show with you for the recipes, you know.

5. We are not clueless 
Romantic, sensitive, sweet? Men are all of the above. Sex and diamonds? They are happy to offer those too. But here’s the rub: if we gave women what they wanted all the time, then they’d get bored out of their brains and dump us. Where’s the joy in that? Also, we enjoy being wooed too, and withholding the diamonds gives you plenty of opportunity to make us feel special.

6. We know you masturbate 
And so do we, but let’s not tally the scores here. Stop the accusations, and start sharing those ‘special tips’ of yours. And the next time you say things are not heating up in the bedroom, how about you tell us what you’d like us to do?.
