Eighteen-year-old Tony Putman is currently being held in custody for allegedly assaulting a 93-year-old man and robbing and raping his 84-year-old wife in Kanas City, MO. The teen allegedly broke into the elderly couple’s home Monday afternoon through the basement window.
When Putman saw the husband, he attacked the 93-year-old man. He hit him in the face and tied him up with a belt. When the 84-year-old wife returned home from the bank with $400, she heard her husband moaning and went upstairs to check on him– that’s when she met Putman.
Putman bound the woman’s hands and demanded money from her. The woman gave him $5. Putman forced the woman upstairs, stole her $400, and raped her, according to court documents. Putman also allegedly stole jewelry from the couple’s home. The 93-year-old husband broke free and found his wife crumpled in a head on the floor. The couple’s son-in-law, Chris Garcia, spoke with reporters saying “You see all that stuff in the news and then the next thing you know it happens to your family. It’s just a horrible thing that someone would do something like that to two elderly people.” The couple was treated at a local hospital and released Monday night.
Police received a description of the stolen car and discovered the vehicle before 3 P.M. They became involved in a short chase with the driver. Three people in the car were taken into custody but ultimately not charged. “I did it all,” Putman allegedly told police, “they had nothing to do with anything.” However, when Putman arrived at police headquarters, he recanted his involvement in the crime. He denied being at the couple’s home. He claimed he acquired the jewelry from his mother, he found the stolen car on a street, and he injured his sliced wrist from wrestling with his cousin.
According to court documents, blood evidence was obtained at the scene where Putman cut his arm while breaking into the couple’s home. Putman’s mother denied giving her son jewelry and his cousin denied wrestling with him. Putman was charged with six felonies Tuesday afternoon, including one count of rape and two counts of robbery. He is in police custody and prosecutors are seeking a $200,000 bond for him.
