A man in Lagos has been arrested by police in the state after he was accused of stealing in a church.

30 year-old Tunde Aro is said to have stolen a dummy Samsung Galaxy phone from the Favorite House church in the Lekki area of the state believing it to be a real one.

He was caught after the members of the church devised the trick of using the dummy phone to help them catch the thief that had been robbing them for months.

The Daily Independent reports:

The suspect, an indigene of Ondo State, was transferred to SARS from Ajah Police Division where he was arrested him.

The security team of the church having been brainstorming for months to put an end to several missing items like laptop, phones and others resorted to using the phone to unravel those behind the incessant theft.

Eventually, Aro was said to have picked the phone and on his way out of the church, he was caught and handed over to the police.

During interrogation, it was discovered that the suspect had once been remanded in prison over a matter relating to stealing thus prompting his transfer to SARS for a discreet investigation.

In an interview with Saturday Independent, the suspect said “I’m 30 years old indigene of Ikare in Ondo State. I live around ELF Bus stop in Lekki Area. The address is No. 6 Femi Sule Street, Lekki.”

“I was formerly working at Hotel De Island in that area. I have lost my job. I left the Hotel because of problem. It bothers on salary problem and some missing stock. I was arrested because I picked phone in the Church after service. They said I’m a thief. The usher said a lot of things have been missing in the church. I wanted to hand it over to the usher before I was arrested,” he claimed.

Investigation however revealed that he was already on his way out of the church entrance when he was apprehended.
