What we can all expect from the airports concession projects

Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, on Friday inaugurated the two committees that would see the airports concession programme in Nigeria to its end.

They are the Project Steering Committee, which he heads and the Project delivery committee.

The airports concession programme is the Federal government’s Public Private Partnership initiative to ensure the establishment and sustenance of world class standards in both infrastructural development and service delivery at our airports.

Not sure how we feel about this yet but since no one asked us, we’ve resorted to hoping that only good things come out of the process. But we aren’t delusional enough to think it will all be good.

Here a few things we think we already know will happen with this project:

It will take a few more months before it kicks off.

Later this year at the earliest. They’ll keep us waiting and speculating while they award contracts and do whatever it is Nigerian project managers and contractors do to elongate the lifespan of any project. See how long it took FRSC to implement the speed limiters.

The only projects that sneak up on us ready made are the #ChangeBeginsWithMe type. So don’t be expecting better service at the ticketing office just yet.

Start saving for higher tolls

Once they get the concession going, they are definitely going put up new toll entrances or revamp the old ones and we will pay for them and we will accept these new, more expensive ‘gate-fees’.

Remember the Lekki concession?

That’s not an international airport. No we are not calling it that. This Public/Private Partnership better fix that otherwise there is no point.

For those who haven’t been there, the arrivals section of this welcomes you into a tent.

Yes, a tent. That needs to change.

The Nnamdi Azikwe airport under construction will finally get its day

The Abuja airport has been under construction for quite sometime now and we cannot wait to finally see and use all the new things still covered in blue construction sheets.
