Car accident: 14-year-old paralysed boy dies

If death could be restrained, Mubarak Abdul-Mojeed, a 14-year-old boy, paralysed by accident on December 11, 2011, would have lived.

But after all efforts to ensure Mubarak lived, death snatched him away from his family, friends and loved ones on Wednesday, January 23.

His father, Alhaji Kamardeen Abdul-Mojeed, last two weeks had sought assistance for the boy’s surgery in an Indian hospital after he had spent more than N3m on his medical bills.

He had said the cost of the surgery at Apollo Hospital, Chennai, India, was N5m..

PUNCH Metro had reported on January 11 the pathetic story of Mubarak, who in company with his mother, Sikirat and his brother, Ridwan, were involved in a road accident in 2011.

On the fateful day, a ‘learner’ driver allegedly rammed his Sport Utility Vehicle into a Keke NAPEP (tricycle), conveying the three of them.

The Jeep owner and a passenger in the tricycle died on the spot.

In the accident, Mubarak, who was an SSS 1 pupil, was diagnosed as suffering from the paralysis of both lower limbs.

He was also said to have had difficulties in urination and defecation because of the spinal cord injury he suffered in the accident.

Abdul-Mojeed, who broke the news of Mubarak’s death on the telephone on Thursday, said the lad died on Wednesday at Amazing Grace Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

He also said he (Mubarak) had been buried on Wednesday according to Islamic rite.

On how much he got from the public after his appeal for assistance, the deceased father said he was able to realise N125,000 from three persons.

Abdul-Mojeed said, “Mubarak died on Wednesday at Amazing Grace Hospital, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. I took him in my car on Tuesday to Ogun University Teaching Hospital to run some tests. By the time we got to Sagamu, on our way back, I noticed he was not doing fine. I took him back to Amazing Grace Hospital where he was admitted.

“They said he was suffering from chronic malaria. By 4am on Wednesday, the boy had died. The death jolted us. However, we take solace in the fact that Allah gives; Allah takes.”
