A government worker, identified as Omoniyi, was arrested by the police on Sunday, for allegedly raping his 14-year-old stepdaughter in Lagos.
The victim, who couldn’t stomach the ordeal anymore, told a neighbor about the abuse last week. The alarmed neighbor took her to a non-governmental organization – Community Surveillance Patrol of Nigeria.
The NGO took the case to the police station, leading to Omoniyi’s arrest.
Ebenezer, one of the officials of the organisation, gave an account saying: “The 14-year-old girl’s case was reported to us as a matter of sexual abuse by her stepfather. We then informed the police.
“Omoniyi is a civil servant in Osun State. There were text messages that the suspect allegedly sent to the girl, whenever he came to Lagos on the weekends. The girl claimed the suspect had been sleeping with her since 2014.”
The girl is currently being rehabilitated by another NGO, the Bimbo Odukoya Foundation, with the approval of the Lagos State Ministry of Youths and Social Development.
