Commentary: Like PHCN, like Nyesom Wike

Since his swearing in as the governor of oil rich Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, has fluctuated in a way that can only be likened with the electricity situation that has bedeviled Nigeria for years.

The Governor constantly oscillates between opposite decisions; going right now and going left the next minute liken a driver driving on an unfamiliar road.

In recent weeks, Wike has dismissed and recalled several officials in his administration, the latest being the recall of the River State Commissioner of finance and the State Accountant General– who were ordered to vacate their offices immediately, and were called back to their positions days later without any reasons for their recalling, or for their dismissal in the first place.

Last week Thursday, Wike also recalled the Local government council chairmen that he had previously sacked without reason.

This decision, and subsequent reversion of it, places a huge question mark on the person of Nyesom Wike and the probity, capacity and worthiness of him to be the governor of River state –a state that has historically contributed immensely to Nigeria’s revenue.

Perhaps, the Governor is ruled by fear and paranoia of one who rode into power on the wings of wrong doings, one cannot tell. But we can easily discern that Wike is distrustful of even his advisers.

It is too early to tell what the future holds (but of course we always pray for the best) but Wike’s indecisive nature reeks of one who is insecure, unsure and distrustful.

In some ways, it is understandable that given the hot political clime of Rivers state, the governor would be careful in choosing his associates.

However, in calling, dismissing and recalling members of his administration, Governor Wike gives off an aura of one who is uncertain and insecure –if not paranoid.

Wike should, as a matter of common sense and due diligence, conduct appropriate investigation into the persons he appoints into his cabinet and most avoid making shaky decisions that never stands, else he risks making a fool of his administration and putting doubts in the minds of the good people of River state over his capacity to govern.
