#DanaAnniversary: The timeline of a chilling tragedy

Dana crash timeline

The world stood still as news filtered through that a Dana Aircraft travelling from Abuja to Lagos crashed in Iju Ishaga, on the outskirts of Lagos.

153 passengers on-board the fateful flight lost their lives instantly and an unknown number of casualties were recorded on the ground.

As we remember the dead today, one year after, the anguish persists and the loss remains fresh even with the passage of time.

Over a hundred and fifty beautiful souls departed on flight 9J-992 but their memories continue to live in our hearts. We shall not forget.

Below is the timeline of the Dana disaster:

– 3 JUNE (14:36) – Boarding completed and engines started up in preparation for take-off.

– 3 JUNE (14:58) – Dana Air flight 992 takes off from Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport.

3 JUNE 2012(15:15) – Crew discuss problem with the engine indicator light and the engine throttle setting

3 JUNE 2012 (15:18) – DANA 992 makes contact with Lagos Area Control Centre

3 JUNE 2012 (15:42) – DANA 992 radioed an emergency distress call indicating ‘dual engine failure and negative response from throttle.’

3 JUNE 2012 (15:43) – Captain reported saying ‘We just lost everything. We lost an engine. I lost both engines.’

3 JUNE 2012 (15:45) – Plane crashes at printing press building in Iju-Ishaga neighbourhood of Lagos.

5 JUNE 2012 – Dana Air license suspended. Calls for Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Harold Demuren, to be suspended until the end of the probe.

5 JUNE 2012 – John Obafunwa leads seven other pathologist to commence autopsy on the corpses.

12 JULY 2012 – The Accident Investigation Bureau releases preliminary report on the crash.

8 AUGUST 2012 – LASUTH announces that bodies will be released to relatives in alphabetical order and in batches.

10 AUGUST 2012 – Photojournalist with Leadership Newspaper reportedly brutalised at the mortuary by unidentified assailants believed to be mortuary attendants.

22 OCTOBER 2012 – FAAN names Dana Air as the best domestic carrier for 2011.

4 SEPTEMBER 2012 – Coroner’s inquest into the cause of the crash suspended indefinitely following a suit challenging the coroner’s jurisdiction.

5 SEPTEMBER 2012 – Dana Air joins two other plaintiffs to quash crooner’s inquest into the crash.

5 SEPTEMBER 2012 – FG lifts suspension on Dana Air operating license after a ‘rigorous technical, operational and financial audit of the airline

6 DECEMBER 2012 – Dana Air receives new operating license.

19 DECEMBER 2012 – House of Representatives blame crash on negligence by the regulatory authorities and recommends dismissal of Demuren.

3 JANUARY 2013 – Dana Air commences scheduled flight operations with its first flight taking off from Lagos to Abuja.

24 JANUARY 2013 – Residents whose property were affected by the crash embarked on a peaceful protest over non-payment of compensation.

29 JANUARY 2013 – Senate asks FG to revoke the operating license of Dana Air.

11 MARCH 2013 – Harold Demuren is relieved from his position as the DG of the NCAA.

20 MAY 2013 – The absence of Pathologist and Chief Medical Examiner of Lagos State, John Obafunwa, stalled crooner’s inquest into the cause of the crash.

25 MAY 2013 – 95 of the 125 families who completed their claim form have received interim compensation of 30,000 dollars.

28 MAY 2013 – Relatives of 11 of the passengers on flight 992 received full compensation of 100,000 dollars.
