“Does it make sense to ask people to resume at 5am?” Dangote Group and Access Bank deny forcing staff to work

by Seyi Lawal

Yesterday, viral social media broadcasts indicated that companies including the Dangote Group and Access Bank had ordered their staff to resume at work today or risk being fired.

Said one of the broadcasts: “Obajana Cement Plc, a subsidiary of Dangote Cement, issues ultimatum to workers, resume work by 5.30am tomorrow or be sacked. This is one of the capitalists dat is milking us dry in this land. Let us call the attention of the NLC to this please.”

YNaija however can confirm this morning that the information is false.

“People can be gullible,” said Anthony Chiejine, Head of Corporate Communication for the Dangote Group, to our correspondent this morning. “How does that make sense to ask staff to resume at 5:30am. Will they leave their house at 3am with lanterns and torchlight or what? How do people just believe silly messages on bb? It doesn’t make sense that people are buying such information at all.

“It’s a national cause and we are compliant. This is a responsible corporate organisation. We would not do such.”

A source within the corporate communications department, who has begged for anonymity as the source has not been authorised to speak, echoes Chiejina: “That’s not true. No such message was passed and I am home like everyone else as directed by the NLC.”
