Army forcefully retires Brigadier General for involvement in Ekitigate scandal

The Nigerian Army has forcefully retired Brigadier General Aliyu Momoh for his unprofessional conduct during the 2014 Ekiti state governorship election which saw the emergence of Ayodele Fayose as governor of the state.

The army relied on the report of the committee set up to investigate the Ekitigate scandal which involved several military officials who were alleged to have received financial gratifications to rig the election in favor of the then ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, confirmed the development on Sunday, while speaking to reporters, saying that: “Yes he has been retired from the Army, contrary to reports going round that he resigned.”

It would be recalled that scandal broke out in 2014, when an officer, Captain Sagir Koli, raised alarm over the role Brig. General Momoh and other government officials played in the governorship election.

The army panel, headed by Major General Adeniyi Oyebade, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, submitted its report to the Chief of Army Staff on January 11 and also made suggestions on appropriate punishment.

The army spokesman further said: “Two officers were recommended for compulsory retirement from the Nigerian Army, three were to lose their command and one was recommended for prosecution for collecting financial gratification.”

“Other recommendations include placing 15 officers on watch list, nine officers were to be further investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).”

“While six officers were to face an audit committee and 62 officers (mostly of the rank of Majors-below) were to be given Letters of Displeasure and to appear before their respective General Officers Commanding for counseling.”
