Here are the new movie trailers you might have missed this week

Nollywood movies are perpetually always in cinemas, and while we can complain about their cliched storylines and bad production, I have resigned myself to the fact that these issues might be around for a long time. You watch a movie trailer and you wonder how it’s possible that such movie should be allowed in cinemas. It’s a travesty. That said, here’s a roundup of trailers I watched this week, with some coming to cinemas soon. And, sadly, it’s not all good.

Alter Date

Although not released this week, everything is wrong with the trailer for The Alter Date, a movie from UK-based Nollywood producer, Yemisi Banjoko. The trailer is choppy and badly edited, the colour is off and the story? I’m not sure there’s a story. Anyway, The Alter Date looks like another garden-variety romantic comedy, and stars Bolanle Ninalowo, Tana Adelana, Lilian Esoro, Frederick Leonard, Keneth Okoli among others. Directed by Marc Adebesin, The Alter Date hits cinemas April, 19, 2019.

Comatose

Comatose is reportedly an Afro-futuristic feature film which explores an African perspective on the euthanasia debate. The story follows two siblings, Segun and Omowunmi, as they battle over the life of their ailing mother, Nana, who is in a coma. One wants to pull the plug, the other wants to keep her alive. In a battle of wills, dark family secrets come to light, relationships are shattered, and the true meaning of love is revealed.

The movie is based on a play by Nigerian screenwriter and playwright, Jude Idada, and stars Bimbo Akintola and Kayode Olaiya. It will make its premiere at the 2019 Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou.

Coming From Insanity

My first thought about the trailer for Coming From Insanity is that it’s well-executed. Based on a true-life story about Kossi, a 12-year-old boy trafficked from Togo to Nigeria and enslaved as a domestic help, Afolayan shows an evolution from being subservient to being a, well, criminal. There are lovely shots in the trailer, and it does look like a movie I would like to see. Directed by  Akinyemi Sebastian Akinropo, Coming From Insanity stars Sani Danja, Bolanle Ninalowo, Dakore Akande, Wale Ojo, Sharon Ooja, Damilola Adegbite, Odunlade Adekola, Tina Mba, and Sambasa Nzeribe. The film is out June 14, 2019.
