Twenty-nine-year-old Jonathan Watkins was released from a local hospital on Thursday evening after a gunman opened fire, injuring him and fatally striking his 6-month-old daughter Jonylah, on Monday. So far, Watkins’ reputation appears to be one of a troubled man who is a member of the Gangster Disciples gang in Chicago.

He has allegedly been arrested close to 40 times, with his most recent run-in with the law being last year for possession of cannabis. Immediately upon his release from the hospital, Watkins met with police to provide them with possible leads to the person/people responsible for his injuries and his daughter’s death. ”His wounds haven’t even healed yet and he’s in a lot of pain and so we’re going to go in and whatever the police need to know that he may know, we want to make sure that he fully commits himself to letting them know that,” said the family spokesperson, Rev. Corey Brooks.

In response to growing criticism of Watkins’ previous arrests, Rev. Brooks said: “He paid for his crime. He’s fine with that. We’re not trying to hide from that. We’re not ducking and dodging from that. But that’s not the issue. The issue is a baby got shot and killed and we need everybody to stay on point and stay on focus on what happened.” An $11,000 reward stands for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.

Jonylah was the couple’s only child. The baby’s funeral is slated for  11 AM on Tuesday at Brooks’ New Beginnings Church, 6620 S. King Dr. A wake will precede the service at 10 a.m. “We’ve buried young kids caught in gang crossfire before, but never this young,” said Spencer Leak Sr., director of Leak and Sons Funeral Home. Leak is donating his services for the funeral. He planned to place a special order for a three-foot casket first thing Thursday morning.
