Where is Karen Igho? | The #BigBrother “bad girl” that was not really bad

The ongoing Big Brother is fast coming to an end – to the chagrin of many viewers and the relief of just many others – but there’s usually one question that dominates this period of the reality show, be it Big Brother Africa or as is the case right now, Big Brother Nigeria: “who are the housemates that will make something out of the fame that being on the show has afforded them?

In fact, we have already started them off with questions like whether the latest evictee, Bassey may be the next Ebuka, the host of this year’s show and a former housemate himself who is now one of the top show hosts/MC Nigeria has ever produced.

Ebuka is not the only one in the category of post-show stars. Both Big Brother Nigeria and Africa have produced celebrities like Vimbai, Katung Aduwak, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Gideon Okeke.

While these guys have enjoyed a fairly stable career in the limelightover the years since their participation, there’s another housemate that got famous off a Big Brother show that has been off the grid for a while now.

Karen Igho.

She’d been on the 6th edition of the Big Brother Africa Show which aired for 91 days from 1 May 2011 until 31 July 2011. She went into the house as an unemployed Nigerian contestant along with 25 others from 13 other countries. Malvin was the other Nigerian on the show that year. It didn’t matter that Angolan housemate, Weza fused her and made her leave all her clothes in the store room while borrowing from other housemates, Karen still came out tops at the end of Week 13 going home with $200,000 along side co-winner, Wendall.

Karen milked her fame back home in Nigeria attending and throwing parties. After a while, she also embraced the title of “media personality”.

Having attended the Southwark College in the UK to study Theatre Arts, it came as no surprise when she started to satar in movies like “Omo Ghetto” and “Keeping My Man”. Karen even got a spot on the hit TV series by MNet, Tinsel.

She batteled a bout of cancer between 2013 and 2014 which she notified us bout via Twitter before taking out her breast implants. She also also stopped using the whitening cream people had come to associate with her although that did not manifest until much later; after she’d sworn off materialism, again, via Twitter.

Through al of these, Karen maintained a very active social life. Until December 2014 when she got married to her long term boo,  Yaroslav Rakos and then moved to the UK.

She has not been in the spotlight much since then.

Going by a fairly recent comment on Instagram, Karen has had some sort of turn around and would now rather focus on her baby boy which she had at the Mount Sinai hospital in New York on the 4th of July, 2015.

She’ll turn 34 in a few days on the 6th of April. Let’s see if the new year brings Karen Igho Rakos back into the limelight.
