Like a thief in the night: Kogi speaker, principal officers impeached

This morning in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, all the principal officers of the state’s house of assembly were removed by their colleagues.

As is usual with these cases, it happened on a day when the legislators were not even expected to sit. Lawmakers were expected back in the assembly on Thursday but surprisingly, they say band impeached the Speaker of the Assembly, Abdullahi Bello, together with the deputy speaker, and 10 other principal officers of the assembly.

The sitting today was shrouded in secrecy as no assembly staff or observer was allowed to witness it.

According to reports, the speaker, Abdullahi Bello has rejected the impeachment saying Tuesday’s sitting is illegal. Bello has been having a running battle with some lawmakers who had been plotting to remove him from office. Some are of the opinion that the lawmakers opposed to the impeached speaker are doing the bidding of the state governor, Idris Wada.
