N50m compensation: ‘Slapping Senator’ toyed with the wrong one | The #YNaijaCover

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama, Abuja, has ordered  Adamawa Senator, Elisha Abbo, to pay N50m in damages to the female attendant at a sex-toy shop, Osimibibra Warmate, whom he assaulted.

In 2019, the young senator had been caught on camera assaulting a woman barely three months after he was elected senator and a month before he was sworn in on June 11, 2019. The police had charged the senator before a magistrate court in Zuba, Abuja with one count of assaulting Warmate at a sex-toy shop in Abuja.

However, the presiding judge, Abdullahi Ilelah, had dismissed the case for lack of diligent prosecution by the police – despite the glaring evidence.  The verdict was met with wide rebuttal from the general public. To add spice to an already stinging wound, the senator was seen receiving several awards after the incidence.

Imagine the public jubilation when the news became public that Justice Samira Bature had given the order in her judgment for Elisha Abbo to pay damages to the victim.

Warmate, alongside her legal team including Esosa Omo-Usoh and Nelson Onuoha, after the initial dismissal had gone on to sue Abbo in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed before the FCT High Court; emerging victorious.

The verdict rang like justice at long last. A soothing balm came with the fact that at least he won’t be going scot-free. It gives a bit of hope to Nigerians- maybe Nigeria isn’t a completely lawless nation. But it is important that we don’t get too carried away. The verdict, while a step in the right direction, is incomplete and should, under normal circumstances, carry a jail sentence.

But, for what it is worth, it is a win we would celebrate. A small win- but a win nonetheless.
