Finally, Nigeria Police to use Nigerian bred dogs

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, on Thursday, disclosed that in the last few years the Police force has spent a whooping N600 million on importing and maintaining dogs imported from foreign countries.

Arase, who noted that the country cannot continue spending such amount of money on importing dogs, also stated that resources can be saved if the dogs were bred locally.

He made this known while speaking at the inauguration of the Police Dog Breeding Centre and Ultra Modern Mounted Troop in Abuja .

“This is certainly not sustainable in the face of the current dwindling resources,” Arase said.

The IGP stated that the center will aid the Nigerian police to breed dogs locally and also provide support services to other security forces in the country as well as other West African countries.

It would also save the country monies that would have been spent on importation of dogs from foreign countries, Arase added.

Arase stated that: “It is projected that at optimal breeding capacity, it can produce well above 200 dogs per year.”
