Following the bickering among Peoples Democratic Party governors against President Goodluck Jonathan, former president Olusegun Obasanjo has made moves to broker peace between both sides.

The former president met with several ruling party governors at the Presidential Villa late night on Monday to iron out issues and seek lasting peace to the crises facing the party.

His intervention may have been prompted by a recent visit to him in his Abeokuta, Ogun State country home by five of the governors.

Governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) visited Obasanjo last month to seek his intervention in the PDP and Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) crises.

Their presence at yesterday’s meeting gave fillip to the belief  that the meeting was meant to resolve the lingering crisis in the party.
Other governors in attendance were those of Katsina, Cross River, Taraba, Benue, Ebonyi, Gombe, Abia, Kwara, Enugu, Delta and Akwa Ibom states.
It was learnt that  the Delta  State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, and  his Cross River State  counterpart, Mr. Liyel Imoke, had convinced Obasanjo to summon the meeting with the aim of  ending the lack of cohesion among the PDP governors.

It was gathered that Obasanjo use the session to reconcile the governors, some of who had indicated that they would not leave the party.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The meeting was at the instance of Obasanjo following issues raised by the five governors and the apparent spill over of the division among the governors on cohesion within PDP.

“But this might just be the first step in the series of interventions being championed by Obasanjo.

“The former president is expected to meet with other stakeholders in the PDP as a way of restoring true democracy in the party.”

The meeting reportedly ended at 4.08am on Monday.
Our source  said that Obasanjo told them (the governors) that they might remain there until the early hours of Tuesday if issues raised were not covered in time.
