A woman named Carolyn Hommel is a former employee of Oprah Winfrey’s (pictured) OWN television station. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hommel is suing the network on a number of grounds, including gender and pregnancy discrimination.

Hommel claims she was hired in 2010 as a senior director of scheduling and acquisitions at OWN, which is owned by Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications.

Later in her employment, Hommel alleges she was replaced by a temporary employee after being forced to take a medical leave because of her pregnancy.

Hommel went ahead and took the medical leave and gave birth to a baby girl last March. However, a month after giving birth, Hommel alleges that she was laid off at OWN. Hommel also said she was asked to apply for a position as the network’s vice president, which she did but was not hired.

In her lawsuit, Hommel claims that her direct superior, Michael Garner (who is also named in the lawsuit) gave her a performance review that was not favorable. The unfavorable review made her ineligible for the position as the network’s vice president.

Hommel is seeking an unspecified amont in her lawsuit for gender discrimination, discrimination against her pregnancy, failure to prevent discrimination, disability discrimination, failure to pay wages upon termination, and retaliation. Hommel contends that becoming pregnant and going on medical leave led to her demotion and subsequent termination as an employee of the OWN television network.
