Outta The Speakerbox: Christina Perri takes heartbreak songs to a whole new level

by Rachel Ogbu

Christina Perri’s song “Jar of Hearts” grew gradually through the airwaves. The first time people really heard it was when it featured on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ during the June 30, 2010 show.

Following its exposure on the show, “Jar of Hearts” sold 48,000 digital copies, debuting on the Billboard Hot 100 at #63 and reaching #28 on Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs. Within a month, it sold more than 100,000 copies. Then, her music video for “Jar of Hearts” landed on the VH1 top 20 music video countdown.

Finally everyone started paying attention to the gripping lyrics. The third and fourth lines take heartbreak songs into deeper dimensions.

“And don’t you know I’m not your ghost anymore?

You lost the love I loved the most.”

“Jar of Hearts” is an emotional ballad that fragments all your emotions and then puts then puts them back together by making you feel each one again individually as the song unfolds.

The song opens with regret which turns into despair and then an acknowledgement of defeat. But the chorus comes along with a very angry and confrontational tone. The potpourri is brilliant!

Perri who signed a deal with Atlantic Records on July 21, 2010 continues to build a rather cult following.  Perri’s debut album is titled ‘lovestrong’ and was released on May 10, 2011. Perri’s new single, “A Thousand Years” is to appear on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn movie soundtrack. On October 14, Perri announced on her official Facebook page that fans can listen to a preview of the song on Facebook.

On 13 November 2011, she also performed “Jar of Hearts” on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing results show.
