Blogger, Ex-Model and model manager, Linda Ikeji is author of new book, It Takes You
FIRST LOVE: writing, or modelling?
Is there really any depth to modelling, which you did for years?
There’s a depth to modelling of course, the fashion/modelling industry is one of the major growth areas of business in the western world…it’s only in Nigeria that some people think it’s shallow. I think if well harnessed, the industry can be a major player in improving the economy of this country.
What is your take on Nigerian entertainment, which you cover with your blog?
I think the industry has grown tremendously over the years… more money is being made, more international exposure/recognition.
What challenges did you face in releasing your book, It Takes You?
Raising the money to print the book. Unfortunately we don’t have publishers in this country, so authors have to take care of the cost of everything, which is quite sad. There’s also the problem of distribution and getting people to buy. Only a small fraction of people read books.
What do you hope to achieve with the new book?
Get it across thousands of youths in Nigeria. I believe there’s something in the book that can guide young people in the right path. I want to make a positive impact in the lives of young people in Nigeria. I’m embarking on a book tour soon.
How relevant is blogging in Nigeria?
Is it relevant, really? (Laughter) How many Nigerians even know what blogging is? But to answer your question…blogging is news-on-the-go. You get a lot of breaking news on the Internet before you see it in the papers. In fact blogging has taking over in the western world. There’s a 25 per cent decrease in sales of newspapers/magazine; why buy when you can get the news free on blogs? So blogging is definitely relevant and hopefully in a few years, blogging will catch on in Nigeria and be bigger than what it is today.
And advice you would give a younger person?
Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance! Y!
