Once again, the brightest and best young Nigerians came out to play – the playground was Terra Kulture, Lagos, and ‘recess’ was the #TheAuthenticCelebration – the launch of Season 6 of The Future Awards. The evening began with cocktails on the red carpet as guests chatted, posed for photographs and chatted some more.

A few minutes before 8:00pm, the event was kicked off by the hosts of the night, Gideon Okeke and Lisa aka Omalicha. Omobaba (the ‘fine’ boy) and Castro’s brilliant jokes kept everyone laughing throughout the evening, and guests were treated to musical performances by Waje, Christy and Sage. Particularly memorable were the “IamNigeria” series of video clips featuring TuFace Idibia, Denrele Edun, Stephanie Okereke and Tosin Otitoju, which had guests applauding at the end.

Other highlights of the event were speeches by Chude Jideonwo, Creative Director of The Future Awards/Project and Shade Ladipo., a member of its Central Working Committee “We are the roses that grew from thorns. They called us wasted and now they celebrate us,” Chude said in his introductory speech. Shade explained that “The Future Awards is more than just awards, it’s about empowerment”. She spoke about the schedule for Season 6, and revealed the board of judges, which is now more diverse than ever so that all nominees can get a fair chance for recognition, regardless of their sector of influence.

50 past winners, called the Face of the Future, were also unveiled and presented with certificates. The roll-call included Tolu Sangosanya, Andre Blaze, Funke Bucknor-Obruthe, Matse Uwatse, Debola Lewis and other young people who are presently relevant as role models in their fields. For all who attended the event, #TheAuthenticCelebration served as a fitting way to begin the Independence Day festivities.

Nominations for Season 6 of The Future Awards have opened. Go to www.thefuturenigeria.com to submit the names of young individuals within the ages of 18 and 31 who are making a difference!
